EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US on five Europeans working on combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals that were central to campaigns to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
