From Praise to Fury: Conservative Reaction to Epstein File Release is Divided.

Right-leaning reactions to the partial disclosure of documents involving the Jeffrey Epstein case have been mixed, with some backers of the previous administration pointing out the prominent appearance of Bill Clinton and additional Democrats in images, while others lamented how heavy redactions cast Donald Trump and GOP members in a negative light.

Justice Department Defends Redactions with Fervent Hyperbole

Justice Department representatives justified the redactions with fervent exaggerated language. “Never in American the nation's history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Justice Department been this open with the public about such a delicate law enforcement issue,” declared a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page memo describing the censorship process.

Questions Prompted by Blacked-Out Sections

While Trump's identity and image are visible in some of the documents, the extensive black blocks prompt significant questions about what may be concealed behind them. A number of Republicans immediately called for increased openness.

“People are raging and walking away,” posted Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.

Via a social media post, Republican Kentucky Thomas Massie said the censorship break the statute, and suggested that a subsequent Congress may move to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, today’s file dump grossly does not adhere to both the spirit and the letter of the act,” he continued.

Some Conservative Figures Rally Behind the Disclosure

However, a segment of conservative pundits and former President allies came out strongly in support of the Justice Department's actions.

The release—from a justice department run by key Trump ally Pam Bondi—includes hundreds of documents that are completely censored, and many of the men shown in pictures have their identities blacked out.

But some do not, featuring prominent individuals like Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The presence of Clinton, especially, allowed some rightwing figures to go on the attack.

“This is quite rich how the political left falsely claimed President Trump of being a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to release Epstein files that depict Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” stated conservative activist Laura Loomer.

“New Epstein Files show Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a woman that is not his wife Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only 1 explanation Epstein would take pictures of a Commander-in-Chief with a young woman in a hot tub: Blackmail.”

Former President Spokesperson Issues Statement

Bill Clinton has repeatedly stated he knew of zero illegal actions by Epstein and has never been alleged to have participated in any misconduct. “The administration hasn’t been hiding these files for months only to dump them at the last minute on a Friday to protect Bill Clinton,” his spokesperson Angel Ureña stated in a comment.

“The release is about shielding themselves from what comes next, or from information they will try and conceal forever. Therefore they can release as many low-quality decades-old photographs as they desire, but it isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, not ever be,” the response concluded.

Overall Conservative Comment Seems Subdued

However, overall comment on the right was comparatively subdued after the disclosure, especially when juxtaposed against the vociferous calls for transparency that preceded the legislative vote to pass a bill mandating the documents' publication.

Loomer, who not long ago secured press credentials at the Pentagon, had been one of the most vocal advocates for a complete disclosure. Earlier this year, she criticized the Justice Department broadly and Bondi specifically after a group of rightwing influencers were given physical folders of files that contained little previously unseen data.
