In a significant development ahead of next year's national polls, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.
A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the issues raised by the new generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which led to significant casualties.
"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.
The late summer uprising was sparked by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.
Details of the New Electoral Agreement
According to the formal pact, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political class. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.
Wider Government Consultations Taking Place
In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with several major political figures. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the uprising.
Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a shared duty. The message affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and open atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
