No fewer than 13 people killed and 98 wounded in train derailment in Mexico.

A tragic railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the speed and management of the country's major government projects.

The crash took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a route developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate the cause of this accident,” affirmed the national leader.

The president reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The president added plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Key Undertaking of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose term finished the prior year. This rail line was closely associated with his administration's strategic agenda for the southern region.

Another massive train initiative from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The development of both train projects was managed by the army, marking a dramatic growth of its duties in civilian projects. They were completed at an rapid speed, defying predictions to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously sparked ongoing apprehensions over operational security.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an prior collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a key rival party called for an prompt halt in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This halt was requested pending a thorough safety audit. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."

In reaction, the head of state asserted that the train had been operating in full adherence to all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these vital projects.
