They're Repeating to America What They Did with Christianity

The Trump phenomenon's most telling and defining instances – not its most important, nor most brutal, nor most dangerous, nor most foolish, but perhaps its most illuminating – came earlier this autumn. During the period of several weeks, the American president started showing everyone his plans for an ornate dance hall twice the size of the White House and then began solo dismantling the East Wing portion to build it.

He has done things 10,000 times as bad – the current estimate of fatalities from his cuts to USAID amounts to 600,000 and growing, and presently an analysis predicted his energy policies would cause deaths another 1.3 million. Yet nothing as characteristic. No other president would have attempted – genuinely, no previous leader would have contemplated – unilaterally destroying significant portions of the executive mansion to build a Versailles-style party room, with the direct cooperation of numerous the richest Americans, nearly all of which maintain dealings with the government.

We moved from 'the meek shall inherit the world' into 'the gentle will succumb to cholera'

As bewildering as it is to watch the leader try to upend the established notion about democracy and replace it with its direct contrary, there is one large group within America who might not perceive it totally unfamiliar. This includes individuals like us – among senior generations almost a majority – who were brought up as conventional Protestant believers.

We have witnessed across decades as rightwing evangelical churches converted the Savior we grew up with into the total contrary of our understanding of him. Essentially, they converted a persona of compassion into an icon of hostility who endorses precisely the cruelties that he denounced in biblical teachings; this change developed more slowly, across decades as opposed to months, but it is nonetheless unsettling through similar means, a confusing personal impact for countless people.

A Toxic Christianity Gains Ground

So let me first describe the Jesus from my upbringing, because theoretically Jesus is the center of any Christian faith, and because the fastest-growing cadre within America may possess limited understanding about him since they are skeptics or doubters or spiritual independents. I raise no objection with any of these traditions, nor with any other faith; yet I maintain that exist valuable insights of substantial value in biblical accounts.

It is unquestionably absolutely not the account of a mighty king emerging; instead, a baby is born to homeless parents in a garage, who must quickly flee to a foreign land to escape covert authorities. The infant develops in humble circumstances, a laboring woodworker; his teaching is about love for other people, specifically for the impoverished – not merely emotional affection, but practical compassion, shown by providing food and sheltering. The Savior's reaction to aggression is to turn the opposite cheek – not as an act of passive acceptance, but as a way to educate the attacker; his crime policy is that if someone steals your outer garment you must offer them your pullover also.

The evident and straightforward truth that Christ from scripture requests a type of radical love concentrated on the poor has perpetually caused the Christian faith something of a scandalous religion: engaging for the masses, but due to its intrinsic extremism needing to be controlled. In the 1950s it was controlled by dilution – Protestantism was so widespread that it essentially baptized the status quo.

A Struggle for the Finest Among Us

So I have been inspired to witness the determined opposition regarding Trump arise over the last twelve months. It has been substantial consolation to assist in constructing the initiative that has taken to the streets through repeated demonstrations, and seems to have inspired voters to participate in large quantities in interim political contests. We must have to continue it, and in the same spirit, with American flags during all protests and calls to the finest aspects within national heritage.

We're going to be asked ... regarding how you welcomed the foreigner? Did you welcome them and receive them or not?

The country is optimally secured, to put it differently, through connection to the best about American history, exactly as the Christian faith is optimally secured by relationship to elements that cause it to be special and wonderful, particularly the pattern of Jesus. In neither case does it suggest pretending the most damaging about the nation and religious tradition did not happen; it signifies both modesty and faith, a combination that committed US believers ought to accept.
