Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff is in final negotiations to sell a portion of his ownership stake in the Mercedes F1 outfit.

This transaction values the Mercedes team at £4.6bn – an unprecedented figure for an F1 team – following the McLaren team was appraised at £3.5bn in a change of ownership structure last September.

The Austrian executive, who holds one-third of Mercedes F1, would sell a stake in the region of five percent.

Wolff, aged 53 will remain as team principal and chief executive officer if the sale goes through.

Shareholder Structure

Remaining partners in the team are Mercedes and chemicals giant Ineos Group, who each also own a third of the enterprise.

An official representative said: "We are providing no comment on this. The governance of Mercedes F1 stays unaltered, and each shareholder are dedicated to the ongoing success of Mercedes-Benz in Formula One."

Valuation Increase

The deal would represent a substantial rise in value of Mercedes F1 since Ineos acquired its stake for £208 million in 2022.

This surge reflects the expansion in valuations of F1 teams recently as a consequence of the increasing appeal of the sport globally.

This trend was evident with the success of the Formula 1 film starring Brad Pitt, which was released in summer 2023 and has grossed over $630m (£458m) at the box office.

The film represents the actor's top-grossing film and the most successful sports movie to date.

Present Performance

The Mercedes team are runner-up in the constructors' championship, behind McLaren, with three Grands Prix remaining this season.

Their lead driver George Russell has won two of the 21 races this year and is fourth in the individual standings behind McLaren's Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen.

The team secured a record eight straight constructors' championships and seven drivers' titles, six won by Lewis Hamilton and one for Nico Rosberg, between 2014 to 2021.
